2019 postdoc resolutions’ update – October

October was exciting. I went to a conference and visited a university in Sydney.

I will go through 9 categories and try to score them from 0 to 3, where 0 is no progress, 1 is tiny progress, 2 is some progress and 3 is gigantic progress.

1. I will learn a new research method this year

I have finished a passion project which was a systematic review of online resources. A systematic review is not a new method, but applying it to an online environment is a bit of a challenge.

Progress: 3/3.

2. I will master one new statistical concept this year

Nothing to report here this month.

Progress: 0/3.

3. I will invest in relationships

The conference was great. I have attended the Sports Medicine Australia Annual Conference. What a great event to learn, network and showcase your work. I have met a few interesting people.

Progress: 3/3.

4. I will set up a healthy schedule/lifestyle

This month was good. Australia is not great in terms of food, but it was not too bad. I slept when I could. I have done a few runs while in Australia, and train regularly while in Tokyo.

Overall:  3/3.

5. I will set up an outreach plan

I continue to use Hootsuite, mainly for scheduling LinkedIn posts. Also, I post on Insta @alternative.postdoc most of the days.

The rest is kind of on hold, as I try to push through all the work I want to finish before the postdoc ends.

Progress: 2/3.

6. I will come up with (my dream) a job

Australia has many good unis…

Progress: 0/3.

7. I will make a plan for the future (20 years)

I am so confused on what I should do that it is not even funny.

Progress: 0/3.

8. I will dare to start the project which I have always wanted to do but did not have a chance to realize

A passion project is finished. I have presented the results at the conference and I gave a guest lecture at the uni. The results of the passion project can be found here. It is a database of sports injury prevention programmes – have a look if of interest.

Progress: 3/3.

9. Postdoc progress

I have managed to enter some data and got help with entering some more.

Progress: 2/3.

Summary for October

Learning (points 1 + 2 + 9) = 3 + 0 + 2 = 5

Development (points 3 + 4 + 5) = 3 + 3 + 2 = 8

Future (points 6 + 7 + 8) = 0 + 0 + 3 = 3

This totals at 16 (out of 27) for October 2019. This scoring system makes no sense. The whole exercise of noting what I have done throughout the month is helpful though. It makes me reflect on what I do, how I prioritize my work, and what my progress is.
