2019 postdoc resolutions’ update – November

It is second to last update for this year. This year flew by in light speed. I had presented at the RINSPO conference here in Japan this month and worked really hard to write up the results of this year’s passion project. Also, I had to take care of formalities related to extending my postdoc here in Japan

I will go through 9 categories and try to score them from 0 to 3, where 0 is no progress, 1 is tiny progress, 2 is some progress and 3 is gigantic progress.

1. I will learn a new research method this year

I am starting another online resources review with a New Zealand friend I met at the SMA conference. As it will be the second review of online resources, I have some things in the methodology I want to improve on. It will be fun…

Progress: 1/3.

2. I will master one new statistical concept this year

I had started looking at the injury data from my postdoc. The new project requires some refreshing of my stats knowledge. I did a bit of reading and have some more to do.

Progress: 1/3.

3. I will invest in relationships

I have attended the conference in Yokohama (RINSPO). It is a local conference which means that most attendees and presentations are in Japanese (including mine). However, I have managed to catch up with people I know, but don’t have the opportunity to talk to often. I have talked to some new people too, both in English and Japanese. For an introvert like me, it was huge.

Progress: 3/3.

4. I will set up a healthy schedule/lifestyle

Sleep deprivation. Other things are ok/good.

Overall:  2/3.

5. I will set up an outreach plan

I continue to use Hootsuite, mainly for scheduling LinkedIn posts. Also, I post on Insta @alternative.postdoc most of the days.

As I move to the end of my postdoc, I try to finish as much work as possible. This mainly involves data processing. This means I have to sacrifice other things to be able to allocate time to data processing. I am working on a “3-year rule” blog post, but it goes slowly.

Progress: 2/3.

6. I will come up with (my dream) a job

Australia has many good unis… Still thinking about it.

Applying for jobs in Tokyo though.

Also thinking about some digital endeavors.

Progress: 0/3.

7. I will make a plan for the future (20 years)

Thinking and planning in progress.

Progress: 0/3.

8. I will dare to start the project which I have always wanted to do but did not have a chance to realize

I am writing up the results of the passion project for publication. So excited to see this project come to the end, and so proud of the work we put in, the learning and the outcomes.

Progress: 3/3.

9. Postdoc progress

Entering data was on hold, as my lovely helper got injured. Data processing is on again though.

Progress: 2/3.

Summary for November

Learning (points 1 + 2 + 9) = 1 + 1 + 2 = 4

Development (points 3 + 4 + 5) = 3 + 2 + 2 = 7

Future (points 6 + 7 + 8) = 0 + 0 + 3 = 3

This totals to 14 (out of 27) for November 2019. Yikes, this is low! Interestingly, the score does not bother me. I am happy to take stock of the month and move on to the next one with some new energy and focus.

I hope your month went well… Please let me know in the comment below or via email?
